Facebook and Twitter. Should I join them?

by Jan Shimano

There has been a lot of chatter going on lately about how the viral nature of Twitter and Facebook can actually increase a person’s profits substantially. For the longest time I took very little notice of these two websites, but as so many people I knew were telling me that they had opened their accounts, I had to take a serious look at them.

What I discovered really took me by surprise. It became obvious that these were two serious sites. They were not only being used by teenagers who just enjoyed spending their spare time messaging back and fore to their friends. These sites were being used by all types of very prominent business people.

It didn’t make much sense to me, so I decided to talk to some people I know who are part of the social networking system and they reported back to me that they were actually ‘doing business’ when they were using these social websites. They said that visits to their personal websites were up dramatically and their sales were also.

Some of them had even taken a course or two on how to best utilize these social networking sites. They took it seriously, and each day they set time aside to do some postings and to interact with others.

It was suggested that you build up your list of ‘friends’ gradually. Newbies are tempted to add as many friends as possible in as fast a time as possible. However, this is not a good idea. Quality is more important that quantity if you are looking at this from a business standpoint. The first 100-200 friends you add are the most impactful. You want to make these high level people in your industry.

Another suggestion is to add content to your sites on a daily basis, if at all possible. You don’t have to spend a lot of time. Sometimes just 5 minutes a day is sufficient. You could update your status, pull up news feeds and comment as much as you can. The search engines love content so try to continually be adding relevant information to your pages.

The speed at which these websites are growing is phenomenal. Facebook is actually the 5th largest visited website in the World and Twitter is even adding more users a day to their site than Facebook. It doesn’t cost anything to join these sites so why not experiment with them and see what happens.

I now have my own Facebook and Twitter accounts and I invite you to sign up also.
