You May Be Able to Get a Government Grant
There are a variety of ways to get a government grant and there are several types currently being offered. They apply to any number of people in a variety of situations. Of course, you must qualify for the money first and prove your entitlement. You cannot use the grant funds to augment your personal finances, either.
What is a Grant?
A government grant is a monetary award to provide financial assistance to an individual who meets specific criteria. Anyone who can prove they provide support or stimulation for activities authorized by the U.S. government is eligible to receive this funding; however the monies are strictly prohibited from being used for any service or to buy property that would benefit the government directly. Still, there are over 1,000 government grants that are now available to eligible applicants.
Who Can Apply?
Grants are open to individuals, non-profits, small businesses, public housing organizations, education organizations, and government organizations.
Individuals may also be eligible. You must apply for the grant on your own behalf, and not on that of an organization or company. Of course, you will also have to prove that your purpose for the funding meets the specific criteria of the grant agency. Such agencies include those involved with crime victims, humanities, fish and wildlife, and the EPA.
Grants for Small Businesses
There are several different types of federal grant funding available for small businesses. You may qualify if you are a minority, a woman, disabled, or a veteran of the armed forces.
If none of those criteria fit you in particular, you could be eligible for a grant to further business development in a tribal community, a rural area, an area recently devastated by natural disaster, or in a low-income community.
Another type of grant applies to non-profit groups with a goal of aiding small business. The grant money will not be released to an individual owner of the business, but will go to the non-profit organization itself.
Some federal grants are also offered to small companies that need to hire and train employees. Still others are meant to aid business owners who are in the process of new product development.
Applying for a Government Grant
Each grant has its own application requirements. The paperwork is long and involved and asks you to answer very specific questions to determine eligibility. Because the packets require a lot of time and effort, there is an online tutorial that teaches individuals how to properly fill them out. Be aware that before you begin the application, you are required to have a budget outlining how the funds will be used and the length of your program. Invalid dates will cause the application to be automatically rejected. Many of the fields on the form limit the amount of characters you can include, so you must be precise in your answers.
Then the waiting begins. There are numerous applicants who are all vying for the same funds. You can opt to receive updates on the status of your grant application, but it is not a quick process.
To get a government grant you will have to do everything exactly right and be patient. For some people, using an online company who can help them through the process might be quite beneficial. The money is out there, you just have to know how, where, and when to apply.
